Parenting Tips for Promoting Character

1. Set a good example, be a good role model. Start with the way we treat others or the Golden Rule (Seldom if ever do kids improve without a model) If you can't disclose your flaws and failures it's unlikely they will be able to admit their weaknesses.

2. Learn about Successful people with good character (historical, present, family members etc.) ( Kids need Models and Mentors. Models to inspire them and mentors to advise them.)

3. Use poor role models to illustrate a point as well describe every day examples where good character isn't used (either with family members or others) Discuss alternative ways the situations could have been handled.

4. Promote neighborhood service projects. Encourage good citizenship through volunteering or working on community projects. Brainstorm Ideas of ways we can assist our neighbors.

5. Develop annual themes in your home starting with Responsibility and Respect. Keep a record of respectful and responsible acts shown toward each family member.

6. Establish a "Care Chair" where kids sit and tell about the different ways people care about themselves 1st and others 2nd .

7. Use Gene Bedley's 11 Rules to relate to promote healthy family relationships. You can find them in his newsletter Values in Action! at www.ethicsusa.com.

8 Teach your children "Character Classics", a series of songs on different values that will strengthen them forever!

9. Let them know God's more interested in their Character than their comfort. That Character is developed through adversity and testing!

10. Promote compassion and Heart Training. What does your Heart say. You have to have Heart . Lead with empathy! Help your children see the major decisions of life require consulting your heart.
